The 1934 Lafite-Rothschild, which I have tasted on two or three occasions, must surely be the best vintage of that challenging decade. From the very first bottle that I ever tasted, the 1934 displays all the harmony and elegance you would expect considering its age. Better bottles have been later: generous and (for Lafite-Rothschild) exotic on the nose with orange de sanguine and stewed apricot. The palate is medium-bodied and in common with the 1924, almost like a Pinot Noir in terms of texture and tannin profile. The 1934 is imbued with an almost citric freshness on the finish. In decline, but clinging on!
